You may have missed it, with everything going on in the world right now, but Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip celebrated an important milestone in late November: their 73rd wedding anniversary.
As is customary at such events, the couple posted an official portrait taken at Windsor Palace, where they have been in isolation since the start of the pandemic, although they had a brief stint at Sandringham between closures.
In the portrait, the queen wears one of her signature colors, blue, in the form of a pale blue dress, which is complemented by a pearl necklace and her sapphire and diamond brooch, known as the Chrysanthemum brooch for its floral shape.
The jewel is quite sentimental, as she used it for a series of portraits with her then-new husband, Prince Philip, in 1947, on their Broadlands honeymoon. The couple even recreated those photos for their 60th wedding anniversary in the same location (pictured above), where the Queen also wore the brooch.
It has served him well throughout his lifetime, having been used in various official events as well as portraits, such as the October 1950 family photo for the christening of baby Princess Anne.
As for the brooch’s origins, it is believed to have been a gift to the princess before ascending to the throne, received when she launched a tanker in 1946.
