A Californian photographer has captured an amazingly clear photograph of the craters of the moon, combining the phases of the moon into a single image.
Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy stacked thousands of images together over the phases of the moon to show the moon’s surface with incredible clarity.
McCarthy captured his images on the ‘Lunar Terminator, the line between the light and dark sides of the moon, to give them incredible clarity and contrast.
Posting on Instagram, California-based McCarthy described the plugin, titled All Terminator, as an “impossible scene.”
He said: “From two weeks of crescent moon images, I took the section of the image that has the highest contrast (just before the lunar terminator where the shadows are the longest), aligned and blended them to show the rich texture in all the all the surface.
“This was exhausting to say the least, that is, because the moon does not align day after day, so each image had to be assigned to a 3D sphere and adjusted to ensure that each image was aligned.”
The sun is closer to the horizon at the terminator, creating long shadows that give the surface a three-dimensional appearance.
These shadows make the moon’s surface clearer and features more noticeable craters.
The original shots were taken using an ASI1600MM and an edgeHD 800.
