SEOUL – South Korea has so far identified a total of 79 new club-linked choroanvirus cases in Seoul’s Itaewon district, in a new cluster of infections that has fueled fears of a resurgence of the virus here.
“As of 8 a.m. on Monday, the cumulative workload linked to Itaewon clubs is 79,” Yoon Tae-ho, a senior official at the Ministry of Health, said during the daily briefing on the virus.
Itaewon’s popular clubs and bars emerged as a new hub for virus transmission after a 29-year-old clubber residing in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province tested positive last week after visiting five establishments during the early May holidays .
Nationally, the country reported 35 new patients with confirmed viruses within 24 hours at 12:01 a.m. of Monday. The cumulative total number of COVID-19 cases is now 10,909, according to data from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Of the new cases, 29 were local infections, while six were imported cases.
Seoul reported the highest number of infections with 20, followed by Gyeonggi Province, North Chungcheong Province, and Incheon, which recorded four, three, and two cases, respectively.
No new deaths were reported by health authorities, and the number of deaths so far has remained at 256 for four days in a row.
