The Manila Chooks failed to reach the quarterfinals of the 3 × 3 Doha Masters at the Al Gharafa Sports Complex in Qatar on Saturday.
The Philippine national team, made up of the foursome of Joshua Munzon, Alvin Pasaol, Santi Santillan and Troy Rike, lost both of their games in the group stages to exit the FIBA level 10 competition.
Manila succumbed to no. 1 Liman, aged 22 to 15, to open his campaign on Friday night.
Trailing by seven points, 5-12, the Nationals made a game as they raced to an 8-2 run anchored in Munzon’s three deuces to get close to one, 13-14.
Liman, however, kept his balance as Mihailo Vasic and Stefan Kojic asserted their power to restore order to their team.
Stefan Stojacic, who is Gilas 3 × 3’s head coach, then delivered the winning deuce and completed Liman’s counter with 2:22 to spare.
Liman swept Group A, 2-0, to advance to the knockout stages.
Almost two hours later, the world’s number 8, Manila, prevailed over no. 13 and local team Lusail in a bid to save a place in the quarterfinals at dawn on Saturday.
However, Manila failed to match the larger opposition well.
6-foot-10 Souley Ndour did most of the interior damage, scoring 10 points and his team won 19-14 as the 10-minute playing time expired to reach the quarters.
Munzon, the No. 1 3 × 3 Filipino player, led the fight for Manila by scoring nine points against Liman and eight against Lusail.
