The M5.4 earthquake shook Occidental Mindoro; tremor felt in Metro Manila

(2nd UPDATE) A magnitude 5.4 underwater earthquake shook northeast Lubang in Occidental Mindoro early Sunday morning, and the quake was felt as far away as Metro Manila and nearby provinces, the state agency Phivolcs said.

The tectonic earthquake occurred at 3:18 a.m. at a depth of 76 kilometers.

Phivolcs initially measured the earthquake at magnitude 5.5 before reducing it to magnitude 5.4.

The tremor was recorded in the following areas:

  • Intensity III – Malabon City; Mandaluyong City; Pasay City; Pateros; Quezon City; Taguig City; Tagaytay City, Cavite; Calapan City and Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro; Calatagan, and Lipa City, Batangas;

Instrumental intensities:

  • Intensity IV – Calatagan, Batangas; Malolos City and San Ildefonso, Bulacan; Navotas city
  • Intensity III – City of Calapan, Oriental Mindoro; Talisay, Batangas; Bacoor City and Tagaytay City, Cavite; Muntinlupa City; Guagua, Pampanga
  • Intensity II – Magalang, Pampanga; City of san juan
  • Intensity I – San José, Occidental Mindoro; Palayan City and San Jose City, Nueva Ecija; Gumaca, Quezon; Baler, Aurora

Aftershocks are expected but no damage is forecast, Phivolcs said.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), in another advisory, said the earthquake measured magnitude 5.3.

A USGS map showed the epicenter of the earthquake near Batangas province.
