The lowest ratings in history show us how irrelevant they are – Film Daily

The Television Academy’s 72nd Emmy Awards took place on September 21 on ABC and continued a trend of award shows losing viewership ratings. According to Nielsen’s Live + SameDay ratings, the awards ceremony had just 6.1 million viewers. Its low grades show that the Emmys are one of the most irrelevant awards shows.

The main demographic to look out for is the 19-49 age range. It can be a wide variety of viewers, but they are the target demographic for award shows. Compared to last year’s unhosted Emmys, the awards show had a 25% drop in demographics and a 12% drop in total viewership.

You can’t talk about the ratings without also mentioning the competition you face. The Emmys had to compete with Sunday night football on NBC and the NBA Eastern Conference Finals on TNT. All three were on prime time for their respective networks. Sunday night football He was the clear winner, even getting a slight rally from Week 1 ratings, but the Emmys were simply crushed by the NBA.

Jimmy Kimmel It’s likely to blame for the lower Emmy ratings. In the early summer, a video of Kimmel wearing blackface in a sketch appeared on Comedy Central. The Man Show. Kimmel finally apologized, but it took her too long to address the situation and her statement was mostly explanatory rather than regretful; it was not well received.

The Emmys and Kimmel tried to address the Blackface controversy and show their support for Black Lives Matter. During the show, Kimmel and Anthony Anderson took the stage and chanted, “Black lives matter.” The bit, so to speak, didn’t hit at all. It was embarrassing to see, and neither of them looked good. Maybe the Mike Pence joke would have hit if there was an audience present, but it wasn’t a good fit for television.

The part accomplished nothing and was merely a reminder of the video of Kimmel’s black face. What was a good performance was that 37.5% of the nominees in the acting category were people of color, something the Academy Awards lacked this year. But of the eleven performance categories, only four people of color took home the trophy.

Kimmel should have quit or the Emmys should have fired him. In 2018, when Kevin Hart’s homophobic tweets came to light, Hart finally gave up on him. He refused to apologize at first, but found the controversy overshadowing the ceremony. The Academy Awards did not take place and everything went well.

Every year, there is always a legacy show that wins all the awards. This year that show was Schitt’s cove. We are not criticizing the value of the show representing LGBTQ + in award shows or saying it is a bad show. But it always seems like the show that ends its run dominates the Emmys. Last year was game of Thrones.

Of Schitt’s Creek’s six seasons were only nominated for three. They also hadn’t won an Emmy before this year and it’s the first year that Dan Levy and Annie Murphy have received nominations for their supporting roles.

Schitt’s cove It’s definitely a great show and it deserved the awards it received, but there’s a tinge of sadness as season 6 was the show’s last season and the last chance to win an Emmy. Schitt’s cove went unnoticed for the first three seasons, but we still say: give the show an award while it’s in the air, not when it’s finished.

The Emmys have become predictable. It’s always the same nominated shows with some breakdowns included. The awards show might have increased its minority representation in the nominations, but it was overshadowed by a host who made a lackluster apology for wearing blackface. The all-virtual awards show went through the night without a single glitch or technical difficulty, but was otherwise an irrelevant garbage fire.
