BORACAY Island will further open its doors to more local tourists on October 1, signaling the continued resurgence of domestic tourism across the country.
This development came about as a result of a special meeting called by the directors of the Boracay Inter-Institutional Working Group (BIATF) headed by its president, the secretary of the Environment, Roy Cimatu, and the co-vice presidents, the secretary of the Interior and Government Local, Eduardo Año, and the Secretary of Tourism, Bernadette. Romulo-Puyat, with the governor of Aklan province, Florencio Miraflores, on September 22.
“The reopening of Boracay to new market sources signals a growing momentum for domestic tourism across the country. We are pleased that the BIATF and the local government units of Aklan Province and Malay Municipality have agreed to prioritize health and safety as we welcome more guests to the island in a safe and careful manner, ”said Puyat .
Try before you travel
During the meeting, BIATF leaders approved an earlier request from Aklan province to expand the reopening of Boracay to domestic travelers, in addition to Western Visayas tourists who have already been allowed to visit the island since 16 of June.
“With the goal of a safe and calibrated resumption of tourism business and operations, the Task Force has prescribed several measures, including a Pre-Travel Test that requires a negative RT-PCR result 48 to 72 hours before traveling to Boracay. In addition, travelers will be advised to undergo a strict quarantine immediately after a test and until the time of the trip to the island, ”stressed Puyat.
The Test Before Travel regulation will allow visitors to destinations under a general community quarantine classification to visit the island. The age restriction is also relaxed and allows travelers under 21 and over 60 without comorbidity.
Another key agreement advises airlines to use Godofredo P. Ramos Airport in Caticlan, Municipality of Malayo, as the only entry airport for the transfer of tourists to the island.
Meanwhile, the minimum health and safety guidelines that are already in force will continue to be improved and in accordance with the Interagency Working Group for the Treatment of Emerging Infectious Diseases and national government mandates. Aklan province had previously implemented strict protocols for receiving guests from Western Visayas, as well as strict guidelines for handling Covid-19-related emergencies.
Covid-19 Laboratory
A Covid-19 Laboratory is already operational at the Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital in Kalibo, Aklan, which is part of the network of facilities and services needed in a safe environment for host communities, commercial stakeholders and tourists.
Since the island’s reopening to Western Visayas travelers on June 16, the DOT has already issued certificates of authority to operate 199 hotels and resorts representing 4,416 rooms. (PR)
