LEGAZPI CITY – The leadership of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in the Bicol region said Tuesday that it ordered the Catanduanes Police Director to recommend appropriate sanctions against the Bato City Police Chief for the publication of the latter on social media about the murder of a mother and son of a Tarlac policeman.
Brig. General Bartolomé Bustamante, in a text message, said: “I have directed the provincial director of the police [Col. Brian] Castillo to issue a show of cause order against the police captain. [Ariel] Baruga, the city police officer in charge. “
On Monday, the mayor of the city of Bato, Juan Rodulfo, recommended the removal of Baruga, who issued a statement on Facebook about the brutal murder of the mother and son that went viral on the Internet.
He asked Castillo to transfer Baruga for his biased statement.
Rodulfo, in his letter, said: “We find it very disturbing that Captain Baruga’s FB publication mentions that the murdered mother was to blame because she did not pay due respect to the police, which led him to shoot the victims.”
“As much as we respect his right to publicly pronounce his personal opinion on the murders, he should have acted with moderation and prudence in doing so, considering that he is the Chief of Police of this town,” he said.
In his letter, Rodulfo asked the provincial director of the police to relieve Baruga to allay the fears of his constituents.
He said that Baruga’s loyalty seems to depend primarily on his fellow police officers rather than the oath he took to serve and protect the people.
Baruga, in his FB post, said: “Lesson learned even if our hair is white or we are gray, let’s learn to respect our Police, it is difficult to resist moderation and patience [even if our hair turns grey, we should learn to respect our police, it’s hard to fight against restraint and tolerance]. RIP mom and dad. “
The statement by the municipal police chief angered thousands of netizens who were outraged by the brutal murder of the unarmed victims. PNA
