MANILA, Philippines – The first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines developed by British Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca arrived in the Philippines on Thursday.

The plane carrying 487,200 doses of vaccines from the COVAX facility run by the World Health Organization landed at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) after 7 pm

Later it will be towed to the Villamor Air Base, where government officials, including President Rodrigo Duterte, will receive its arrival.

After the ceremony, the vaccines will be transported to Metropac, Ciudad Marikina.

This is the second batch of vaccines to arrive in the Philippines, after the 600,000 doses of Sinovac vaccine donated by the Chinese government, which arrived on Sunday, February 28.

The vaccines were initially scheduled to arrive on March 1, but were delayed due to global supply problems.

The number of doses scheduled to arrive was also 525,600, but it was reduced due to cargo limitations as the vaccine will be delivered via commercial flight, explained vaccine czar Carlito Gálvez Jr.

The Philippines is expected to receive around 5.5 million to 9.2 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine this year through the COVAX facility.
