MANILA, Philippines – The tropical cyclone number 1 wind signal rose over Catanduanes as Tropical Depression Quinta is expected to intensify as it accelerates slightly over the Philippine Sea, the state meteorological office said Saturday.
In its weather update at 11 am, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said “Quinta” was last sighted 660 kilometers east of Catarman, Northern Samar or 730 kilometers east of Juban , Sorsogon.
“Quinta” is also forecast to steadily intensify to a tropical storm in 12 hours, and may reach severe tropical storm status before making landfall.
“Quinta” has maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 70 kph and is moving west northwest at 30 kph.
According to Pagasa tracking, “Quinta” is expected to make landfall in the Bicol region between Sunday night and Monday morning.
The tropical depression, as well as the trough of Typhoon Saudel (formerly known as Pepito) outside the Philippines Area of Responsibility (PAR) will bring light to moderate rains and occasionally heavy rains over Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) , Bicol Region, Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Bangsamoro Region, North Mindanao and Caraga on Saturday.
