MANILA – Vice President Leni Robredo visited a barangay in the city of Calabangga, Camarines Sur, hit by Super Typhoon Rolly, and met with the village official before whom she was sworn in as Vice President in 2016.

Punta Tarawal, which is located along the coast of San Miguel Bay, was one of the towns most affected by Rolly; the barangay is run by Rolando Coner.

Robredo started a recent Facebook post by writing: “Do you remember Captain Barangay before whom I was sworn in as Vice President?”

He continued referring to Coner: “Yesterday we visited his barangay to check on how everyone was after the typhoon. It’s that man in green, all covered in mud, because he was cleaning the mud from the barangay caused by the floods. He apologized because he didn’t know we were coming. “

Coner showed Robredo the little barangay, saying that the locals were glad they already had a boardwalk before Rolly crashed into Bicol.

“They said they felt more secure now. They proudly showed me the school that our Angat Buhay partner, the AGGAPP Foundation, built in 2017. Despite Rolly’s ferocity, the building came out unscathed. They said that if they had known it would be so robust, they would no longer have evacuated to the mainland. They were telling their horrors when the evacuation center they were in suffered damage during the attack, ”said Robredo.

At least 17 died in Bicol due to Rolly’s attack last Sunday. The typhoon also left about P5.8 billion in damage to infrastructure in the region.

Strong winds and torrential rains from Rolly, the world’s strongest storm so far this year, destroyed most of the region’s flood control structures, according to DPWH Secretary Mark Villar.
