Expectations are high among PBA fans, but this year’s best rookie Joshua Munzon chooses to focus on getting better as he prepares for his first year with Terrafirma, the team’s first in the post-CJ Perez era.
The 6-foot-4-inch Munzon has long been in the limelight and led the Rookie Draft for 2021, especially after Terrafirma’s young star CJ Perez was sent to San Miguel Beer in exchange for the center. Russel Escoto, point guard Gelo Alolino and forward Matt Ganuelas-Rosser. along with the 2021 and 2022 Beermen first-round picks.
Aside from Munzon, the Dyip was able to hook up 6-foot-10 big man James Laput in the eighth pick (from the SMB trade) to shore up the franchise’s talent pool.
“(The expectations of the fans) don’t really affect me. Nobody has higher expectations than mine,” Munzon told ESPN5 quite naturally, shortly after joining the team’s training with the Dyip on Monday morning.
Munzon promises to learn as much as he can in the future, while expressing his excitement at the new chapter of his basketball career.
“Just keep being myself, learn and grow from everything that will happen throughout the year,” stressed the 26-year-old shooting guard / forward.
The Terrafirma core now has a good mix of young Turks and veterans on the roster that includes Escoto, new sophomore Roosevelt Adams, Munzon, guard Rashawn McCarthy, Andreas Cahilig Aldrech Ramos, and newly acquired Matt Ganuelas-Rosser. .
While Munzon acknowledges the team’s talent, he stressed the importance of developing strong team chemistry going forward.
“(We’re) going to work on building chemistry with my teammates. I think that’s the most important thing, learning how the guys play, where they like the ball, things like that will help make this transition easier.” he explained. Munzon.
Munzon, a former California State University standout, said he looks forward to bonding with his new PBA teammates, hoping to bring energy and positivity on and off the court.
“It’s the first step in building bonds with my teammates,” Munzon said. “I am excited to be a part of the team and hope to be a positive influence on and off the court.”
Munzon first broke into the consciousness of Filipino fans after playing as Heritage Import for the Saigon Heat and then Westports Malaysia Dragons from 2016 to 2018 in the Asean Basketball League.
His stock increased further after joining the 3×3 league in 2019 and eventually representing the country on the FIBA 3×3 World Tour 2020.
