CEBU CITY – A model and beauty queen from Cebuana and her boyfriend were arrested and detained for violating quarantine protocols and headed to the beach in the southwestern city of Moalboal in Cebu on Sunday, May 10.

María Gigante and her foreigner Javier Filosa Castro, allegedly violated the restrictions imposed by the government as a precautionary measure against the spread of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19), said Captain Alvino Enguito, Moalboal police chief.

“We have been attracting their attention and yet they continue to ignore our advice,” Enguito told INQUIRADOR.

An investigation was launched to determine how the couple managed to travel to Moalboal and pass various checkpoints.

Gigante, 26, and Castro, 35, were first seen driving through the city of Moalboal, 86 kilometers southwest of Cebu City.

“We asked them to go home, but instead of following the police, they headed to Panagsama Beach in Barangay Basdiot where they swam around 5:30 p.m.,” said Enguito.

Giant, who hails from the city of Sta. Fe, on Bantayan Island, joined the first Bininibing Cebu contest, where he earned the title of Binibining Cebu Charity in 2017.
