Telecommunications companies keep up with increasing demand for Internet us

MANILA, Philippines – Telecommunications giants PLDT Inc. and Globe Telecom Inc. said their networks have remained resilient amid increased demand for the Internet during the holiday season.
Globe said that with the massive increase in online Christmas shopping, Filipinos are well connected and equipped with ever-improving internet connectivity.
Globe’s CTO, Gil Genio, said the record sales reported by retail shopping sites are proof of the company’s strong Internet across the country.
“This shows that our network is capable of meeting the data and speed demands of Filipinos even during the peak season for online shopping and other activities that require stable Internet connectivity,” Genio said.
“Online shopping and payments this Christmas season show that Filipinos are increasingly embracing new digital platforms. Our continuous improvements to the network will provide our customers with an enriching experience as they discover new ways to use digital technologies, ”he said.
PLDT, meanwhile, said its robust fixed and mobile networks have allowed its customers to shop on e-commerce platforms during the holiday season.
“Life under lock and key drove the rapid adoption of digital and online services. It became even more apparent how digital transformation and the use of digital technology have become important for Filipinos in dealing with the current crisis, ”said Smart Communications Inc. President and CEO and Chief Revenue Officer of PLDT, Alfredo Panlilio.
“Internet connectivity drives this rapid adoption, and therefore becomes the foundation of the digital economy,” he said.
Panlilio said that connectivity is important to empower small and medium-sized businesses, as well as large-scale businesses, to withstand the impact of COVID-19 by allowing them to reach their customers through various online e-commerce platforms.

To support the increased demand, PLDT and Smart have further expanded the reach and capacity of their fixed and wireless networks across the country this year, despite the challenges of COVID-19.
The telecommunications companies were previously ordered by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to guarantee the stability of their services with the expected increase in demand in December, as parties and meetings are expected to take place virtually.
“We told the telecommunications companies to prepare for this, because we should be on alert and emergency preparations for December,” said NTC commissioner Gamaliel Córdoba.
