Tacloban Mayor Pressures DOH to Improve System to Prevent Healthcare Workers From Contracting COVID-19

CITY OF TACLOBAN –– The mayor of this city has asked the Department of Health (DOH) to improve its system to ensure that no more health workers contract the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Mayor Alfred Romualdez said that according to a report he received from contact trackers, many healthcare workers infected their loved ones and those with whom they interacted.

As of Monday, at least 27 Tacloban healthcare workers were infected with the dreaded virus.

“We have to address this immediately, once and for all,” Romualdez told a news conference Monday.

“It is not a blame game, but something is wrong with the system and we, the local government, are here to help. We have to be transparent and coordinate with doctors to help, “he added.

Romualdez said that he wanted Tacloban to be free of COVID-19 and that this would not be achieved if health workers continued to acquire and spread the virus.

Tacloban has 420 COVID-19 cases where 316 were active.

Dr. Gloria Fabrigas, a city health official, said most of the 27 doctors who were infected with the virus worked at the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center, which is under DOH management.
