Suspend toll collection without cash, Valenzuela legislator asks DOTr

MANILA, Philippines – Valenzuela representative Wes Gatchalian wants the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to halt implementation of the cashless toll collection system until operators resolve flaws in their radio frequency identification (RFID) systems, which have caused a lot of traffic in the past. Gatchalian made the call after Valenzuela Mayor Rex Gatchalian threatened to suspend NLEx Corp.’s business permit for its “RFID fiasco.”

“I urge DOTr to act quickly to postpone the implementation of the [cashless toll collection], on behalf of our consumers, the automotive public, whose hardships in the long queue for installation and who now suffer in horrendous traffic due to inoperable booths and illegible stickers, ”said the legislator.

In a statement Saturday, he said: “We are going to reassess where the fault and stagnation is in the system, improve and resume until operations are ready and fully functional.”

He made the remarks a day after his brother, the city’s mayor, gave NLEx Corp. an ultimatum to resolve the RFID glitches that caused heavy traffic on the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx), part of which it runs through. the city of Valenzuela.

The city mayor asked the company to present an explanation to the city government for its “miserable breach of its obligations.”

Earlier this week, NLEx Corp. rolled out its RFID at toll booths to switch to cashless transactions amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
