CEBU CITY, Philippines – Authorities at Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) will present a new policy as it prepares for the “new normal.”
GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC) in a statement released to the media on Thursday, May 14, announced that each passenger should only have one companion to assist them at the airport.
Andrew Acquaah-Harrison, GMCAC’s chief executive advisor, was subpoenaed, requesting public cooperation in his request to limit the number of supporters for departing passengers.
“This will go a long way in helping us avoid proximity crowding anywhere on the airport premises,” said Harrison.
The rule of one companion per passenger is among its new set of protocols that will be implemented in accordance with the security guidelines of the Inter-Agency Working Group for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
“GMCAC and the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) are implementing strict preventive health and safety measures in MCIA. This is in preparation for the lifting of travel restrictions and the resumption of flight services in line with airline schedules, “added Harrison.
These include the mandatory use of surgical or facial masks for passengers, guests, airport and airline workers, temperature controls, and disinfection before entering airport facilities.
The GMCAC also stated that the airport rules under the “new normal” will require various measures of social or physical distancing, such as assistance without contact between passengers and growth on the ground.
“The required social clearance of three to six feet at the waiting points and the policy of a separate seat in the waiting areas will be implemented. There will be visible markings on the floor to guide passengers as they queue in high-traffic areas such as entrance gates, lockers, check-in counters, F&B and retail stores, boarding gates, escalators and stairs, ”the group said.
They added that the use of elevators within the airport complex will be regulated.
Meanwhile, the medical isolation rooms, which have been in operation ‘since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak (coronavirus disease 2019), will continue to be used as a medical isolation room where Quarantine Office staff can conduct quarantine assessments. “
As various provinces in the country relax their Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) and establish the transition to General Community Quarantine (GCQ), passenger airline operations are expected to resume soon.
However, the three Philippine airlines announced that their respective national and international flights will remain canceled until May 31, 2020. / dbs
