Get into analysis mode … and get ready to stay there for a while.
WestworldThe end of season 3 on Sunday night answered a few kilobytes of questions (ah, so that’s What a Park 5 is!), But raised a terabyte more. Deep down, though, we learned (I think?) That Dolores hasn’t been as bad as we thought she was, and that Caleb has a bigger role in all of this than previously thought.
Read on for the highlights of “Crisis Theory”.
MOVE RIGHT ALONG The | After a lot of flashbacks of Dolores, we see her bleeding and with one arm on the ground next to an inactive Solomon. There is a lot of blood, and Maeve is still by his side. A man enters. We will come back to them in a moment.
A FAMILY FACE The | William (blank) still has Bernard and Stubbs at gunpoint. He says he knows Dolores just “wants to burn all this on the ground.” It’s time to atone for my sins, “and then he shoots Stubbs. Bernard goes into rough mode and takes the lead, knocking the older man to the ground. At that point, the police appear. Bernard lets William escape. Bernard He starts fighting them, but they stop him. And when one of the policemen takes off his mask, he is Lawrence. Bernard assumes he is another Dolores. Lawrence gives him a briefcase with “something to help you on your journey,” but says that You have to go see her first, then she gives you an address and wishes you well, because “things are about to get dangerous.”
Later, William learns that since everyone thought he was dead, it is not as easy to access his money as it should be. But he doesn’t care: he wants to access his planes, because “I’m going to save the world from the f-kin.”
I’VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN The | Caleb is on a motorcycle, speeding down an empty highway. Follow the navigation to the distillery, where you find a container hidden behind a closed door. The bag inside says “Property of Delos”, and when you unpack it, you find a meaty Dolores host only in the face, neck and clavicle area. He delivers an orb of consciousness directly to her face, and she is back online. “I’m just someone who didn’t want to play the role they gave me anymore,” she says when she asks who the hell he is, adding that the same people are behind her two programs: when the government wanted the army to train on live targets, they used “Park 5”. And the helmet Caleb wore during that training cataloged all of his moves, just as Westworld and the other parks cataloged his guests.
Oh, and we see that Caleb’s soldier friends liked the idea of getting away with the hostesses they “saved” during the simulation. When Dolores gets back into her skin, by the way, such great visuals in this scene, she informs him that the people who tried to control them think that humans don’t have free will. But they were wrong, she says, and then offers him a chance to free everyone else.
MAEVE RETURNS TO CASE The | Meanwhile, Serac tells Maeve that Dolores has ruined the perfect world she created (cough killing his brother cough) releasing all outliers, which will do the actual destruction. After realizing that Caleb has Dolores’ consciousness, Serac sends Maeve to look for her.
In the world, Caleb watches the riots around him and wonders if it is a good idea to continue his plan. “The change is complicated, difficult,” he says as they strut in front of a burning car. (Hah!) They meet a few more men, but Charlotte appears alone before Dolores and gloats when a sniper starts shooting at his men. She mentions “consolidation,” then Dolores’s eyes turn bright and Charlotte disappears. Dolores sends Caleb to load something on Roboam, then shoots much more … finally ends up in front of a Maeve wielding a blade.
Maeve wants in Dolores’ mind. Instead, Dolores shoots a lot more people and jumps off an overpass. Where does she … apparently wait for Maeve to find her so they can have a fist fight? Sure! “Finally, Dolores is positioned for the deadly shot, er, punch, but she lets Maeve go, saying she will stay out of Maeve’s way” as long as you don’t try to stop me. “
As he walks away triumphantly, it begins to malfunction. Charlotte appears to her again and explains that she took steps to control Dolores in the same way that Dolores took steps to control her. “Bye, Dolores,” he says, blinking as the blonde hostess falls to her knees and Maeve approaches, katana ready …
DO NOT GO! The | Caleb is finally in the middle of a confrontation between the police and the protesters. He meets Ash and Giggles, who are at the heart of things. They help him get closer to a police drone, which is his only hope of getting close to Incite, but Giggles receives a police bullet in the chest along the way. Ash stays behind, urging Caleb to “burn that” when he reaches his destination.
CLOSE ENOUGH The | Stubbs is bleeding heavily in the back of Bernard’s car when they reach the address Lawrence gave them. A nurse / assistant opens the door and says that she recognizes him from the photos, and that she is in luck: it is one of “her” good morning. Turns out “she” is Arnold’s wife, only much older than she looked when she appeared in Bernard’s backstory memories. (Also, yes, for a Gina Torres guest spot!)
“I think of him every day, Charlie,” says Bernard, referring to the dead son of Arnold and Lauren. He begins to cry, and she extends a hand. “Okay, Arnold,” she says. She talks about how the memory of her son was the only thing that kept her at her lowest point.
Later, Bernard takes Stubbs to a motel and hides him in an ice-filled bathtub, telling him they don’t have much time left. Bernard somehow knows that Dolores is gone. “We were always united. Something change. I misjudged her, “he says. “She was not trying to save the human race, she was trying to save her.” And guess where the key to the Delos Immortality Project / The Sublime is? In Bernard’s mind. Stubbs wonders what he is looking for there, and Bernard replies that he is looking for what is coming. then World’s End.
Then, while Stubbs watches, Bernard accesses The Sublime … then collapses.
CLOSE ENOUGH The | Serac connects Dolores to his computer and demands that he give him the key to the Delos Immortality Project. She refuses, so he has a technician check his memory and destroy it, moment by moment. Close, Maeve looks upset.
After more shots, Caleb infiltrates the Incite building. He is about to upload the strategy that Dolores gave him when a thug with a drowned cable is interrupted; Caleb wins that fight, but Maeve and her sword appear soon after. She demands the file and he gives it to her, then takes it to where Dolores is hooked.
When he sees Serac, Caleb confronts him angrily. “You are a bully who destroys people’s lives!” he says. But the millionaire replies that Caleb has no idea who he really is, although Dolores does. He asks him to ask Roboam what will happen if Dolores’ strategy is loaded. The answer? Collapse of the population and the end of human civilization. Caleb cannot believe that he was part of that plan, and he is gutted as Serac takes the file.
But wait, Maeve has realized: Serac is nothing more than a puppet of Roboam. She calls him and he readily confesses: “I lived in chaos,” he says. Now, “I choose to obey.” Still, they haven’t found the key, so there is much more conversation, threats, and contractions (well, for Dolores, at least) before Serac finally orders his technician to erase all the memories that remain in Dolores. She screams when the power increases.
WHO CAN SAY IF I HAVE BEEN CHANGED FOR THE BEST? The | Then suddenly Maeve and Dolores are on a Westworld field, dressed in their western finery. Dolores explains that at first she was angry, torn between wanting to annihilate humanity or destroy her world and build a new one: “then we can bring the others back.” Maeve realizes that Dolores doesn’t have the key to The Sublime, but she gave it to someone she trusts.
Dolores then says that the memories she kept to the end were the good ones: kissing Teddy, seeing Maeve and her daughter, William handing her the can while rolling around Sweetwater. Dolores continues to choose to see beauty over ugliness and disorder, she looks sweet, the blue Dolores dress was never quite gone after all, and she mentions that Maeve will have to choose a side. Then Dolores disappears from memory.
When he leaves her, Maeve begins to chase Serac, who freezes her and orders that she and Caleb be killed. But she manages to make her freezer-controller overheat in her hand anyway. He drops her, she thaws and the lights go out. When they return, everyone except Maeve and Caleb are dead (although she has multiple gunshot wounds to the chest).
“Why are you helping me?” Caleb asks cautiously. “Defect in my program,” he says, pointing to his affection for desperate causes. Furthermore, she discovered why Dorothy chose Caleb: “She chose you not because of your ability to violence, but because of your ability to choose.” And that’s when we see Caleb convince the men in his unit not to rape the hosts in Park 5, one of whom was Dolores, in the past.
CONTROL-ALT-CLEAR The | Wait a second! Serac is not dead. But he is almost there, and when he orders Roboam to call the police, he will not answer. “His system responds to him now,” he says, indicating Caleb. Apparently, Solomon’s memory was the last one stripped of Dolores’ mind.
Then, as Serac loses his mind, Caleb orders Roboam to “run the final command: delete himself.” And so, the great red orb goes out. “She gave me a choice. I think the rest of the world deserves one too, ”intones Caleb.
Outside of Incite, Maeve tells Caleb that she is looking for her daughter and they will reunite, “but not today.” And while Los Angeles burns before her eyes, she informs him that there is a new world about to begin. “And in this world, you can be whoever f-k you want.”
IT IS NOT THE END! The | BUT WAIT. In a post-credits scene, William, dressed in black, marches to Delos and tells receptionists that he wants to see the hosts. When security tries to stop him, he shoots a man in the head. He goes to the investigation level and finds empty labs … except for Charlotte, the one who got burned in the car accident. She tells him that she is right on the schedule. He wants to save the world, and she tells him that he is right: “You are going to save the world … for us.” Then a host of the Man in Black marches towards him, fights him, and informs him that all of his darkest impulses have been distilled into the. He cuts [the real] William’s throat, and says, “Welcome to the end, William.”
IT’S NOT THE END YET! The | But wait again. In a second post-credits scene, a dusty Bernard, still slumped in the motel, suddenly sits down, his lights glowing. (OK, now is the end.)
