This is no longer UAAP, but rookie Renzo Subido proved he belongs in the big leagues after catching fire at the decisive moment to help NorthPort beat Terrafirma, 107-96, in the PBA Philippine Cup on Saturday at the AUF. Arena with Smart 5G technology in Ángeles, Pampanga.
The former Santo Tomas University star guard turned off the lights in the final 4 minutes and 34 seconds to help NorthPort pull off a big win after four straight losses to start the bubble conference.
The speedy guard opened his scoring streak by completing a three-point play, then followed with three triples as the Batang spring converted a slim 89-86 lead into a breakaway.
CJ Perez tried to get the team back but time was not on his side and Dyip staggered to his fourth loss in as many games. Terrafirma is the only team without a win in the compact conference.
NorthPort head coach Pido Jarencio, who like Subido has roots in UST, praised his young point guard after the game.
“I’m not (surprised). He can do that. He’s young but he showed maturity in this game,” said Jarencio, who was the head coach of UST when Subido was transferred to Spain. “He has nerves of steel. He stepped up. Someone has to do it, because we’re trying to find ways to win the game.”
Eleven months ago, Subido hit a triple in the UAAP Final Four against the University of the Philippines to send the Tigres to the final.
As Subido put the finishing touches on, Kelly Nabong carried most of the load in the second half of the Batang Pier.
He lost 10 of his 18 points in the fourth period, including a nasty step back to put the game out of reach, 101-90, with 2:10 to play.
“We have to come out with a lot of energy. We can’t go 0-5 in the bubble. We have to go out and show a little aggressiveness. That’s what we did and we came out on top,” Nabong said.
The excellent performances of the two spoiled the 25-point exit for current Rookie of the Year CJ Pérez. He also had 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals on his behalf.
Rookie Roosevelt Adams also had a good game, making five triples on the way to 19 points for Terrafirma. Before the game, he was averaging just 8.6 points.
