MANILA – Preparatory training for student athletes will now be allowed in areas under general community quarantine (GCQ) and modified GCQ (MGCQ), Malacañang announced on Monday.

This after the Interagency Working Group for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) allowed preparatory trainings to resume as long as health and safety protocols are observed.

“Student-athletes of university athletic associations, as defined in the Law of the Republic No. 10676 or the Law for the Protection of Students-Athletes, may resume their preparatory training in areas under General Community Quarantine and Modified General Community Quarantine, subject to the guidelines that may be issued by the Higher Education Commission (CHED) ”, IATF resolution no. 68 read.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque also confirmed this in a virtual press.

“Those amateurs of UAAP, magpa-practice is now teams (for the fans of the Philippine University Athletic Association, our teams will now begin their practice), ”he said.

CHED, the Department of Health (DOH), the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), and the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) previously called on college team officials to keep student-athletes safe in the middle of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

This statement came after the revelation of alleged bubbles involving two collegiate teams.

The case of the men’s basketball team at the University of Santo Tomás (UST) has been involved in controversy after CJ Cansino confirmed that he was dismissed from the campus.

Last July, the IATF-EID approved the recommendation of the PSC and the GAB to allow the resumption of training for basketball and soccer teams.

Individual activities such as jogging and biking are also allowed.

Face shields are required in public places

The IATF-EID also approved the use of face shields in “supermarkets, public markets, shopping malls, and in places where government-initiated meetings and critical government services are held or provided.”

Initially, face shields were only required on public transportation and at workplaces.

The use of face shields will also be encouraged in all other public areas.

Local government units were also ordered to provide their constituents with face shields subject to the availability of funds and giving priority to members of the vulnerable population, the IATF said. (PNA)
