BEIJING: China urges the United States to cease arms sales and military contact with Taiwan, and cancel relevant arms sales plans, to avoid further damage to China-United States ties and peace and stability in the Strait of Taiwan, said a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry.
Spokesperson Zhao Lijian made the remarks when asked to comment on recently approved US plans to sell three $ 1.8 billion worth of weapon systems to Taiwan.
Zhao said that US arms sales to Taiwan seriously violate the one-China principle and the three joint China-US communiqués, especially the Aug. 17 Communiqué, seriously interfere in China’s internal affairs and undermine sovereignty and China’s security interests.
“The move has sent deeply misleading signals to the secessionist forces of ‘Taiwan independence’ and has endangered Sino-US relations, as well as peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” the spokesman said in a daily press conference. “China is firmly opposed.”
Zhao urged the US side to fully recognize the highly damaging nature of arms sales to Taiwan, respect the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqués. In the US, stop arms sales to Taiwan and military contact with the island, and withdraw relevant weapons. sales plans, to avoid further damage to ties between China and the United States and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
“China is going to give legitimate and necessary responses according to the evolution of the situation,” Zhao added.
