MANILA – Construction of SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp.’s Lemery plant in Batangas will resume after it was suspended due to the Covid-19 shutdown.

“The Lemery Works steel plant is of national importance as it will reduce our dependence on imports of important steel products necessary for the government’s ambitious infrastructure program,” SteelAsia Chairman Benjamin Yao said in a statement on Monday. Sunday.

The SteelAsia plant in Lemery will be the country’s first steel girder manufacturing plant, with a capacity to produce 1.1 million tonnes of steel products per year.

The new facility will have two production lines, one for the manufacture of steel and the other for the rolling of steel profiles.

The country’s largest steelmaker will produce steel products used in heavy construction and infrastructure, such as H-beams and I-beams, sheet piles, angles and heavy channels.

Currently, the country only imports these steel products.

SteelAsia aims to begin operation of the Lemery facility by 2023, generating 1,500 direct jobs.

The new plant will also recycle steel scrap for export.

“When you export and process our resources abroad, you are creating jobs in another country. With this new plant, we will recycle our steel scrap here and create local jobs, “added Yao.

SteelAsia has manufacturing facilities in Davao, Cebu, Misamis Oriental, Batangas and Bulacan.

The steelmaker also has projects in Compostela in Cebu, Tarlac and Quezon. (PNA)
