It’s December, and that means it’s time for Spotify’s annual year-end Wrapped. 2020 has been pretty terrible and wrapping it all up, this year’s shrouded adventure is one of those horrible “stories” that all services (including Spotify) are loading up on. At least you get a playlist loaded with your best songs of the year after you’ve gone through the tedious process, and there are two new ones to go along with it.

There are two completely different versions of Wrapped this year, although Spotify doesn’t immediately make that distinction clear. If you visit the desktop site, you will see the generic experience that describes the most popular artists and songs worldwide. But the custom experience is only available in the app this time, probably because it’s a History.

The story has 15 huge parts and takes several minutes to go through it (since the various parts cannot be skipped), which makes the whole process a bit off putting. Many of the sections seem superfluous, but it’s a pleasantly narcissistic walkthrough through your musical tastes for the year, and includes some interactive elements like quizzes on your best podcasts, decades, and artists. You’ll also earn a handful of badges based on achievement categories, like listening to a song before it hits 50,000 plays or amassing a huge following on your playlists.

My best songs for 2020

To the usual Your Top Songs playlist for 2020 are a few new playlists to add to the experience: Missed Hits, a discovery playlist full of songs from this year that you may not have heard, and On Record, which mixes some of your favorite songs with conversations. and interviews of those musicians.

Among global trends, Spotify notes that Bad Bunny was its top streaming artist globally, though The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights did earn # 1 song streaming spot of the year. The Joe Rogan experience, recently exclusive to Spotify, earned the platforms’ top podcast spot.

To see your best songs of the year, launch the Spotify app and find that new 2020 Wrapped section, and be sure to save the playlists it generates.
