MANILA, Philippines – Errol Spence Jr. is still interested in fighting Manny Pacquiao in the future.
Spence, the WBC and IBF welterweight champion, is set to defend the title on December 5 in Texas against mandatory challenger Danny Garcia, but made it clear that a showdown with Pacquiao remains in his sights.
“After this fight, of course I would like to fight Manny Pacquiao. It’s coming out so I would love to have that fight, ”Spence told The Sun.
“He is a living legend, and I have never fought someone of that caliber. He’s big and not just a boxing star, he’s an icon, a megastar. That would be different and send me somewhere else in terms of popularity. “
At 41, Pacquiao remains one of the most popular tickets in the sport and Spence knows that not every day one can have the opportunity to share the same ring with a legend.
“Pacquiao has been in sport for 20 years, he is an icon even outside of sport. Everybody knows who Manny Pacquiao is. That would be a great fight for me, ”he said.
But if Spence gets his shot at the Filipino icon, the undefeated Long Island, New York native, he may have to wait his turn.
Pacquiao is likely poised for a boxing match in 2021 against UFC superstar Conor McGregor in a fight that Spence has no problem with if it’s going to happen.
“I don’t blame him, Manny Pacquiao earned that right. He earned his right to make money and fight whoever he wanted to fight, because he fought whoever was lined up to fight him, ”said Spence, 30.
“I’m not mad about it at all, if I was 40-something and they offered me that kind of money to fight Conor McGregor, I’d take the fight too, I don’t blame him.
