MANILA, Philippines – Beleaguered Santo Tomas University men’s basketball head coach Aldin Ayo tendered his resignation, the Inquirer learned Thursday night.

The development, which was shared by a person closely monitoring the situation, comes in the immediate aftermath of the Philippine College Athletic Association Board of Managing Directors (BMD) meeting that addressed the Grunting Tigers training in the city. Ayo’s native Sorsogon.

Ayo reportedly faces sanctions, which the BMD has elevated to the league’s Board of Trustees, for training camp that violated national government sports guidelines during the coronavirus pandemic.

UST is expected to act on Ayo’s advisory this Friday, as the majority of the Thomasian community, especially its student-athletes and coaches, continue to rebound from both the effects of a health crisis and rumors of a Heavy-handed sanction reminiscent of Salle’s Suspension throughout the event in 2006.

The BMD said its recommendations “cannot be made public at this time” out of “respect for the member school in question.”

The training in question was highlighted after the shock departure of UST skipper CJ Cansino.

Since then, four more members of the Growling Tigers have left the team, including incoming sophomore Rhenz Abando, who was the target of poaching attempts by rival schools last season.
