Tailor-made by Nike for Jordan’s ‘85 season, the Air Jordan 1s (left on size 13, right on size 13.5) feature some standout details you won’t find in the public launch of the shoe.
On one hand, it is a medium, with red laces. (In 1985, AJ1s sold to the public only came in high or low versions, with black laces.) The Nike swoosh branding on this pair, the auction house says, is “longer, slimmer, and more aggressive.”
At this early stage in his career, Jordan still didn’t have the luxury (or influence) to come to every game with brand-new kicks, making this pair a bit more worn out than most other used shoes. As Sotheby’s describes it: “The stripes and markings on the beautifully wrinkled, black and red and white uppers are presumably due to shoes hitting each other or on the shoes of opponents while Jordan was wearing them for battle.”
The still legible signature of his Airness is scrawled on the right shoe.
The auction house acquired the pair from Jordan Geller, a sneakerhead who runs the Shoezeum in Las Vegas.
“Having this pair has been a real treat,” Geller said in a statement, “and with all the excitement surrounding Michael Jordan and ‘The Last Dance,’ my wife and I decided it is time for the shoes to find a new one. home. “
Speaking for Sotheby’s, Brahm Wachter, its director of ecommerce development, said: “Michael Jordan is perhaps one of the best athletes who has ever walked the face of the earth, and it is an honor for Sotheby’s to offer this historic pair of sneakers of sport . “
