Sony apologizes for PS5 pre-order mess and promises more stock in the ‘next few days’

Sony has apologized that PS5 pre-orders are a disaster. “Let’s be honest: PS5 pre-orders could have been a lot more fluid,” says Sony from the official PlayStation Twitter account. “We really apologize for that.” Pre-orders for the new PS5 console began on Wednesday, a day earlier than Sony had said that retailers would accept orders. This led to confusion when Walmart and others started randomly opening their PS5 reserve slots. Some pre-orders even disappeared after about a minute.

Sony now says it will release more PS5 consoles to preorder “in the next few days,” promising retailers will share more details. It’s unclear if these pre-orders will ship on launch day, and Sony also promises “more PS5s will be available until the end of the year.”

Amazon also began warning customers yesterday that some of its PS5 pre-orders could arrive after launch day, likely because the retailer doesn’t know exactly how many units it will receive.

The chaotic pre-order situation started just a few weeks after Sony began an invite-only registration for PS5 pre-orders that seemed to avoid the messy situation we saw this week. Eric Lempel, PlayStation’s head of global marketing, had also previously promised “safe to say, we will let you know when pre-orders will be placed. It’s not going to happen a minute in advance. ”Sony tweeted Wednesday that pre-orders would begin Thursday, and two hours later, Walmart started its pre-orders for PS5.

We’ll share the PS5 pre-order details as soon as we get them from the retailers, but if you’re interested in ordering Sony’s next-gen console, we’ve put together the links to the PS5 from all the US retailers here.
