CEBU CITY, Philippines – To prevent tragedies at sea, the Philippine Coast Guard in Cebu (PCG-Cebu) has ordered the suspension of all maritime travel to and from sailing in areas directly affected by severe tropical storm Quinta.

In a notice issued Sunday, October 25, PCG-Cebu Acting Commander Alvin Dagalea said his mandate would take effect immediately until further notice.
“Due to the Tropical Cyclone Warning Sign (TCWS) No. 1 and 2 raised in Luzon and Visayas, affecting the country brought by Severe Tropical Fifth (Storm), the Central Cebu Coast Guard Station is now imposing the temporary suspension of the travel of all types of vessels or vessels as proactive measures to avoid maritime accidents ”, it is indicated in parts of the notice.
Travel to and through Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Marinduque, Albay, Batangas, Sorsogon, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, Northern Samar will not be allowed as these provinces were placed under Signal No. 2.
The suspension of the trips also covered those destined for Masbate, Quezon, Cavite, Bulacan, Occidental Mindoro, Bataan, the southern part of Zambales, Metro Manila, Easter Samar, the northern part of Capiz and the northern part of Antique.
“Ship travel will resume when weather and sea conditions improve in these areas,” Dagalea said.
“The boats that intend to take refuge will be authorized as long as it is manifested by means of a written request and no passenger will be allowed to board,” he added.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), in its severe weather bulletin issued at 11 am Sunday, located the Quinta center 180 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes.
Pagasa said Quinta had escalated into a severe tropical storm at 8 a.m. Sunday before making landfall in the Bicol region between Sunday afternoon and evening.
Fifth packs winds of up to 95 kilometers per hour, with gusts of up to 115 kilometers per hour.
The state meteorological office has also advised the public, especially those in areas that will be directly affected by Quinta, to take extra precautions and monitor regularly for weather updates.
