Wesley So played the role of spoiler on his way to the Skilling Open crown through a thrilling triumph on Tuesday.

So, born in the Philippines and who began representing the United States in 2014, overthrew current world chess champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway and took home the $ 30,000 (P1.5 million) prize.

“I have to apologize to Magnus for ruining his birthday,” So said according to multiple reports.

“I am very surprised, of course, to beat Magnus. He is the best player in the world ”, he added. “Coming to the game, all I wanted to do was put up a good fight and make the games interesting.”

Carlsen, the world champion of classic, rapid and lightning chess, couldn’t turn it into a double celebration on his birthday after his loss to So, but he still took the loss with kindness.

“First of all, congratulations to Wesley on a well deserved victory,” said Carlsen, who also regretted making crucial mistakes in the game.

“It was a very exciting match. Frankly, losing to him is not a shame, it is not a disaster, “added Carlsen.

The victory also put So at the top of the standings with 46 points. INQ
