San Miguel Corporation (SMC) is providing bicycles to its workforce as an alternative means of transportation amid continued travel restrictions across the country.
The conglomerate’s program subsidizes employee bicycles from P2,000 to P3,000 per unit, payable in 12 months, without interest.
An increase in demand for bicycles among employees prompted SMC to design the scheme, according to President and Chief Operating Officer Ramon S. Ang.
“While we continually do massive RT-PCR testing of our 70,000 employees and extended workforce to ensure safety at our facilities and offices across the country, we must provide them with additional comfort and security when they go to work,” he explained.
“We bought 1500 initial units for our facilities in different locations. As soon as we offered them, they were all accepted. Now we are expecting more units to be available for more employees in more areas, ”Ang added.
Commuter bikes, complete with drum, lightweight and basket brakes, are priced at P2,080 for employees.
Also available is a compact, rigid mountain bike with front suspension, front and rear disc brakes and gearbox for P3,000.
The company launched a special COVID-19 transportation loan for employees to expand their options for alternative modes of transportation.
“With more and more cities installing bike lanes, and with even our main thoroughfares dedicated to bike spaces, cycling to work is now a more viable option for many Filipinos,” Ang continued.
“It reduces the risk of exposure to COVID-19 because it is socially distant and it is outdoors. It promotes better cardiovascular health and there is no need to pay fees. Just be sure to observe all the safety measures and remain alert and careful at all times. ”
