MANILA, Philippines – San Miguel Corporation (SMC) President and CEO Ramon S. Ang said Saturday that the company is implementing sustainable measures to address flooding at the site of the planned New Manila International Airport in Bulacan.
This comes after the director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), Dr. Renato Solidum, during a Senate panel hearing, noted that the planned domestic and international airport area is prone to flooding as well as tremors and liquefaction of the soil.
“The airport design fully takes this into account and in fact we have begun to implement sustainable measures to address the floods in Bulacan that have existed for several decades and have been made worse by clogged waterways and drains,” Ang said in a release.
Ang added that SMC fully agrees with Solidum’s observation that adequate engineering intervention measures are needed to mitigate risks such as flooding.
To ensure that the airport is “resilient, sustainable and provides the best benefits to Filipinos,” Ang added that SMC has turned to three major global airport construction companies: Groupe ADP (Aeroports de Paris), Meinhardt Group and Jacobs Engineering. Group.
Airports where the companies have worked include Singapore’s Changi Airport, France’s Charles de Gaulle Airport, and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in the US.
The proposed new Manila International Airport in The city of Bulakan in Bulacan is expected to decongest the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) and support growth and development in Central Luzon.
The airport project, which is estimated to cost P740 billion, is a private investment and will cost the government nothing, Ang said.
“This airport is perhaps the Filipinos’ largest, most ambitious and revolutionary infrastructure project for Filipinos,” said the president of SMC.
“An effort of this magnitude requires the cooperation and support of many stakeholders. As such, we remain committed to engaging the public as we move forward to realize this vision and make this right, ”Ang added.
