MANILA – A steel beam from part of the Skyway extension under construction crashed into passing vehicles Saturday morning, leaving at least one dead and 3 others injured.
In a statement, Skyway contractor EEI Corporation said the beam, which spans the length of two northbound rail posts of the Skyway extension project, “tipped and fell” as it was brought into position around 8: 50 am
The beam struck passing vehicles on the service road below, “killing at least one” and wounding several more, EEI said. Police said at least three were injured.
Those affected were taken to various hospitals, the company said.
Police counted at least 5 damaged vehicles: 1 taxi, a van and an AUV, and 2 motorcycles.
“We are monitoring the progress of the injured and we are trying to contact their closest relatives for proper coordination and provide any assistance they may need,” EEI said in a statement.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the affected families. This is an unfortunate and heartbreaking accident that must not happen again. We will immediately review our safety and operating protocols as we build a strategic infrastructure for the convenience of the public,” he said.
EEI said efforts are underway to clear the area and restore traffic flow, as the incident has led to a backlog of vehicles.
