LA PAZ – At least seven students were killed and five seriously injured when they fell from the fourth floor of a university building in Bolivia after a metal railing gave way on Tuesday, the government said.
Footage from the incident shows students crammed into a narrow hallway trying to enter a lecture hall.
A metal railing can be seen giving way under the weight of pushing and shoving students, and several plummet to the concrete floor below at the University of El Alto, near La Paz.
Others clung to their fellow students to escape the same fate.
“As a result of this accident, seven have died and five are in critical condition, some of them stabilized” in hospitals in the city of El Alto, near La Paz, said Health Minister Jayson Auza.
Interior Minister Eduardo del Castillo had previously reported five deaths and three injuries related to the incident, but the total was reviewed after the Health Ministry reviewed the details of the case.
The injured and deceased were between 20 and 24 years old.
Del Castillo said he had ordered an investigation into the accident.
