A week after a Panamanian-flagged Gulf Livestock 1 freighter sank in the East China Sea, the Japanese government began scaling back its search and rescue operation for the crew, which included 39 Filipinos.

In a radio interview on Wednesday, Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III was informed by the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Osaka, Japan that the Japanese government has begun to withdraw its deployed assets. of the operation.

The assets mentioned include two aircraft, three patrol boats and divers.

The development reduced the chances of survivors being located immediately if they are still at sea.

Bello, however, said that he is still praying that some of the other crews survived.

Currently, three of the 39 Filipino crew of the Gul Livestock 1 have already been found.

Two were alive, while the other died, when his ship sank during a storm last week.

Bello thanked the Japanese government for its continued search and rescue efforts. (Samuel Medenilla)
