For the second year in a row, the San Francisco Shock has been crowned the Supervision League champions. The team took home the 2020 trophy today after a 4-2 series with the Seoul Dynasty. This makes Shock the first team to Supervision League history to win two season titles in a row.
Thanks to online tournament play and COVID-19 travel restrictions, the two regions of the Supervision League couldn’t meet at all during the regular season. For that reason, the Grand Finals were transformed from an end-of-season game to a double-elimination group. Two teams from North America traveled to South Korea and self-quarantined before competing against the top two teams from Asia.
In the opening rounds of the tournament, the Seoul Dynasty fell to the bottom group after a loss to San Francisco Shock. Shock cut through the winners ‘group, while the Seoul Dynasty eliminated the Shanghai Dragons and Philadelphia Fusion in the losers’ group to reach the final match of the Grand Final.
This was the first appearance of the Seoul Dynasty in a Supervision League Grand Finals, but several members of the roster were making their second appearance on the league’s biggest stage. Dynasty’s main tank Hong “Gesture” Jae-hee and DPS Park “Profit” Joon-yeong were part of the 2018 London Spitfire championship winning list.
San Francisco Shock won 2019 Supervision League Grand Finals with a 4-0 sweep against the Vancouver Titans. At this year’s tournament, Shock returned with most of the starting roster that captured the 2019 trophy. Those players have now become the first Supervision League players to win two season titles.
Like the 2020 winners Supervision League Championship, the San Francisco Shock brings home $ 1.5 million in prize money. The Seoul Dynasty won $ 750,000 as runners-up.
