Samsung Electronics president Lee Kun-hee died at the age of 78 at 3:59 am on October 25 after more than six years of suffering an acute myocardial infarction.
The late president became the director of Samsung Group in 1987 after the death of his father and founder Lee Byung-chul. It increased the group’s market capitalization from 1 trillion won to 396 trillion won from that year to 2018.
In 2006, it became the world’s largest television manufacturer by beating Sony and the world’s largest smartphone seller by beating Apple. Under his leadership, Samsung Group rose to the top in more than 20 global markets, including memory chip and mobile phone.
The autonomous management of each Samsung Group subsidiary is expected to remain under the leadership of his son. Samsung Electronics Vice President Lee Jae-yong has led the group’s third-generation management with subsidiary chairs since 2014. The group’s Office of Future Strategy, which functioned as a control tower, was dissolved in 58 years in 2017. At present, third-generation management can be broadly divided into electronics subsidiaries, including Samsung Electronics, non-manufacturers, including Samsung C&T, and finance branches, including Samsung Life Insurance.
