Andrey Rublev clinched victory over Lorenzo Sonego in the Vienna final on Sunday to win his fifth ATP title of the season and secure a spot in the Tour Finals in London.

The Russian managed a 6-4, 6-4 victory in under an hour and a quarter and has won more ATP tournaments this season than any other player.

“This tournament is really special to me because my grandmother was Austrian too, so I have Austrian blood,” said Rublev, who reached the US and French Open quarterfinals this year. “It is a really special title for me.”

It will make its debut at the season-ending Tour Finals, which begin on November 15 and are held in London for the last time.

“I am happy to be able to compete in London for the first time. I’m really looking forward to it, ”Rublev added.

“There are still so many things that I need to improve and it will be a good challenge for me to see exactly what I need to improve to be at that level, to be able to compete against the top eight players.”

Rublev, 23, won the Vienna event without even losing serve and was too strong for the lucky Italian underdog Sonego, who beat Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.

Only the world’s number one Djokovic has won as many matches as Rublev’s tally of 39 in 2020.

Rublev, ranked eighth, is the first Russian to win five titles in one season since Nikolay Davydenko in 2009.
