CLARK FREEPORT – TNT guard Roger Pogoy emerged as the first PBA Press Corps Player of the Week in the bubble after overcoming with a stellar performance to anchor Tropang Giga’s undefeated streak in the first week of the restart of the Philippine Cup.
Pogoy lit the conference’s inaugural bubble at the University of Angeles Foundation Sports and Cultural Center powered by Smart 5G with a new career-high 45 points increased by 10 triples in TNT’s 100-95 win over Alaska.
He also became the fifth player to hit at least eight triples in three games.
The Gilas Pilipinas stalwart then scored 11 points, nine rebounds and two steals when Tropang Giga defeated Terrafirma, 112-101, last Tuesday.
The 6-foot-2 sniper played through a sprained ankle to provide ample support with 15 scoreboards and four boards in TNT’s 107-88 thrashing of defending champion San Miguel last Friday.
In all, the 28-year-old Pogoy averaged 23.7 points built on 44 percent from 3-pointers, seven rebounds, 1.3 assists and two steals in Tropang Giga’s 3-0 start on the bubble.
The Cebuano cager edged out teammate Ray Parks Jr. and Phoenix’s Matthew Wright for the weekly mention given by members of the media covering the PBA beat.
“I didn’t expect to play that well, but during the lockout, because I was still fit, my hard work paid off,” Pogoy said.
“I am happy because I did a good performance and then the team won. But my teammates said it was continuous. Nothing should be celebrated yet, ”he added.
Meanwhile, Rain or Shine’s guard Adrian Wong claimed PBAPC’s first Rookie of the Week honors.
The Ateneo product was the first newcomer to be named Player of the Game after finishing with 15 points, two rebounds and two assists in the Elasto Painters’ third straight win at NorthPort’s expense, 70-68, last Sunday.
