MANILA, Philippines – A critic brought up the issue of necrophilia and pedophilia on Wednesday by questioning the Sexual Orientation Equality and Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE) bill, drawing the ire of the former’s representative Bataan district, Geraldine Roman.
During the House committee on women and gender equality online hearing on SOGIE, Atty. Lyndon Cana of the Coalition of Concerned Families questioned the limits of the “plus signs” in the LGBTQIA + community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, plus) as outlined in the proposed measure.
In her argument, Cana mentioned the problems of necrophilia and pedophilia, and asked if they are also included as “fundamental human rights”.
Ang asks, when will this end? When will the orientation end? What is the legal limitation of the right to sexual orientation? For example, if an old man is attracted to very young children, sexual orientation na ‘yun, pedophilia yun. Included din ba yan as a fundamental human right? “Cana said.
“What about those who are sexually attracted to the dead? Included din ba yan sa LGBTQ +? The proposed bill does not define a boundary or limitation between misconceptions of gender identity in sexual orientation, ”he added.
The arguments did not sit well with Roman, the first transgender woman to be elected to the lower house, who criticized Cana for raising such points in the debates.
“I would just like to apply, I hope this is the last time I hear about necrophilia or pedophilia. How dare you! “Said a clearly irritated Roman.
“We are here in the House of Representatives. Do you seriously think that we would legislate something that would allow necrophilia and pedophilia? How dare you! “She added.
In questioning the SOGIE bill, Cana also asked if the rights of the heterosexual community are also recognized in the proposed measure.
Cana argued that some concepts of the measure are too subjective.
“Sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. All of these are subjective, emotional, fluid, changeable versus constant gender. Ang nangyayari dito, the feelings that are orientation, identity, expression, will be stronger than the facts, ”said Cana.
“For example, yung… CR toilet, a man who feels like a woman goes to the women’s bathroom. Y yung base nya ng gender identity. There are several women there who feel uncomfortable with the presence of a man who feels like a woman, “she added.
In addition, Cana said: “Under SOGIE, talo si gender kay gender identity. We would like to ask the question, what is in the bill for the heterosexual community? What are your rights? Do they also have feelings? Do they also have orientation, identity and expression? … The heterosexual community is not even mentioned in the SOGIE bill ”.
In the 17th Congress, the House passed the SOGIE bill in final reading, but its counterpart in the Senate only languished in the interpellation period.
During Wednesday’s hearing, the committee approved adopting the version of the measure approved by the 17th Congress as its working draft in the discussions.
