Rockets scout BJ Johnson was tragically killed in a bicycle accident Thursday. He was 65 years old.
Shams Charania of Athletic described him as a “devastating lost”For the NBA, the Rockets and the basketball community.
“You won’t find a friendlier person in the NBA,” ESPN’s Tim McMahon said in a cheep.
Johnson began working for the Rockets in 1994-95, the second champion team in franchise history, until last season. He crossed paths with hundreds of players throughout his 25 years in the organization and it is very clear that his death has affected and shaken the NBA community.
Here are some of the tweets written by the Rockets and the NBA community reacting to his death:
Before reaching the @HoustonRockets Chris Wallace told me that the best scout in the NBA was BJ Johnson and that I should talk to him first. I followed his advice and what followed was an incredible 14 year friendship. He was by my side in every key decision. I can not believe he is gone. RIP BJ

BJ Johnson of our Rockets family passed away tonight. An explorer, a father, a friend, always an uplifting spirit. 1986 joined the Rockets as a scout and has been in that role until now. I honor my friendship with him since I lived next door to Ralph Sampson in Virginia. Your beloved RIP HOSS!

Nooooooo not BJ Johnson. When I was an untested rookie, it helped me become very confident that I had a bright future, even when I didn’t see it. He wasn’t even on his team. He always had some words of encouragement, or he just kept them real with me. Prayers to your family.
