Outside the Office of the Vice President (OVP) in Quezon City, vehicles formed a long queue bringing donations for the victims of the series of typhoons that recently hit the country.
“Overwhelmed by the generosity of our fellow Filipinos. At a time of great need, we all came together to help those who need help most, ”Robredo posted on Twitter as she and members of the Bangon Luzon relief campaign were busy packing and distributing aid to typhoon victims.
The cash donations also went to Kaya Natin, OVP’s partner in raising funds for the typhoon victims, who reported raising 55 million pesetas as of Friday.
P19M more
The increase in cash aid, amounting to P19 million, boosted Kaya Natin’s previous total of P36 million after the vice president became the recipient of a 20-minute tirade from President Duterte.
“Most of the messages that accompany the donations are to the effect that they wanted to help the victims of the typhoon and it is their way of showing their appreciation for the kind of work our office has been doing for our kababayan,” said Robredo .
Numerous organizations have partnered with Kaya Natin to provide funding and logistical support for the relief effort.
The Mayonnaise band pledged to donate the proceeds of an online concert this month to the victims of the typhoon. Small businesses and large food companies have also pledged to support the relief campaign.
“I just found out that an additional P5 [million] was received by [Kaya Natin] overnight. Woohoo! That brings the total to P55 [million]. More communities will be helped. Bayanihan in action. But others are still busy trolling. [Please] do not face the trolls. Just block them, ”Robredo said in a tweet.
Online defamation
Since three typhoons hit the country, Robredo has been busy with relief efforts despite an apparent campaign on social media to smear her.
Several online trolls accused the vice president of bringing a director or members of the media on her visits to evacuation centers, a claim she has denied.
Presidential legal advisor Salvador Panelo wrongly said that the vice president used a C-130 cargo plane to distribute aid packages in Catanduanes province. Panelo later apologized, admitting that Robredo was not on the plane that delivered relief supplies.
Even Robredo’s daughters were drawn into the controversy by presidential spokesman Harry Roque, who claimed that their tweets were one of the reasons behind Duterte’s spiel during a televised presidential speech.
Proud of daughters
But the vice president lamented on Facebook that her children were harassed.
“I have always been proud of the people my daughters have become. They are their own people. What they have accomplished so far is due to their hard work. They never used our name or any little influence we have to get what they want, ”he said.
