MANILA, Phlippines – The Philippines first-person shooter (FPS) scene is gearing up with a new nationwide tournament, Valorant First Strike: Philippines, in addition to recognizing aspiring athletes at the college levels.
“In Southeast Asia, Valorant’s appetite for esports has been tremendous and we are pleased to partner with the region’s leading esports organizations, one of which is Mineski Philippines, to introduce new heights of competitive gaming in the region.” said Chris Tran, director of Esports at Riot Games in Southeast Asia, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
“Given this opportunity, we will do our best together to provide the best fan experience.” MineskiGlobal founder and CEO Ronald Robins expressed in a video during the partnership announcement press conference.
Valorant esports tournaments will be run by Mineski Philippines through the Philippine Pro Gaming League in association with Globe Telecom starting in 2021.
But Valorant fans already have something to look forward to as we approach the end of 2020.
Last September, Riot Games announced its first major international tournament series, called First Strike. First Strike is a series of globally timed regional Valorant final events that will run from December 3-6.
Along with other countries in Southeast Asia, the Philippines will participate in this event with Valorant First Strike: Philippines, in which eight teams fight for the title and a prize pool of 500,000 p.
“Asian talent has always struggled in terms of first person shooter games. Now with this game [ahead] and we already started as soon as everyone else in the world. We won’t have that handicap, “Robins said.
Qualifying for the first attack of Valorant: Philippines will be done through Mineski VxV. Registration is ongoing until October 28, and open qualifiers will take place the first two weekends in November.
In addition to the national tournament in late 2020, Mineski Philippines will also host college-level Valorant tournaments with its Youth Electronic Sports Program (YEP). Currently ongoing and streamed through their Facebook page, the YEP has the National Interscholastic Cyber League (NICL) Valorant Tournament with a jackpot prize of P150,000, with around 50 schools already registered.
“This is an opportunity for the Philippines to be on the starting line with everyone else in the world. Mineski, with their YEP and NICL programs, we have not just one, but 3 or 4 amazing programs to develop and display Filipino Talent from electronic sports to the world. ” Tran added during the press conference.
“For us in the youth esports program, this is a great opportunity to develop the esports scene for a new generation. We hope that our college esports athletes will do their best and take pride in their schools, ”said YEP Director Marlon Marcelo.
“It’s been more than a year since the trend has shifted to mobile gaming and mobile esports.”
Registration details for Mineski VxV can be found through their Facebook page. Interested parties can also view their college tournaments via Facebook Live via the Youth Esports program Facebook page.
