The K-Pop industry is no stranger to the world right now. With its growth in recent years, people from all over the world have joined the world of K-Pop, learning about these different groups and enjoying their songs regardless of language. One of the groups that people have grown to love in the last four years is the girl group Blackpink.
In the new Netflix documentary, Blackpink: Light up the sky, director Caroline Suh takes us into the world of the famous girl quartet, allowing those who don’t know them to get to know them and giving their fans, known as Blinks, a closer look at who they really are.
Meeting Blackpink
Light up the sky He introduces us individually to Jennie, Lisa, Rosé, and Jisoo, and we learn how they came together as trainees at YG Entertainment, one of the top 3 entertainment companies in South Korea. The girls explain how they spent years training for their big debut moment; Suh includes clips from his trainee days as well as audition videos. Every month, they went through exams and tests to see if they would make it the following month. Finally, the four girls tried out together and Blackpink came to life.
After their 2016 debut with “Whistle,” Blackpink became the fastest K-Pop girl group to reach number one on the music charts within two weeks of debuting. From there, the accolades continued to grow, winning awards in both music shows and award shows. In the movie, the girls talked about the day they found out they were number one, indicating that they were in the middle of practice and Rosé kept going through the charts, while Jennie said that reaching number one was the most exciting part. everybody.
Polished, but honest
The documentary allows the members to talk about their lives before Blackpink; At the beginning of Jennie’s segment, she even goes on to say that she generally avoids interviews or questions about herself, showing how they are more open than usual throughout these 79 minutes. The movie brings a kind of melancholic tone as the girls discuss leaving their lives behind to pursue their dreams, feel homesick, or feel empty when they’re not on stage. However, it is balanced with behind-the-scenes videos of their tour performances, candid talks, and preparation for their historic Coachella 2019 stage, where they were the first K-Pop girl group to take the stage at the famous festival.
While this piece doesn’t end as a full reveal of the group, Jennie, Lisa, Rosé, and Jisoo explain that while they’re under the fame and lights, they’re still people. They still love to go out to eat and buy vintage clothes, like Lisa does in the documentary, and do things that people love to do every day. In the final scenes, the girls argue about the future, wondering what might happen when new groups emerge as they grow up, and Rosé states that “you never know how long it will last.”
Earlier this month, Blackpink released their first full-length album, correctly titled The album, along with their title track, “Lovesick Girls,” so in addition to the release of Light up the sky It will probably attract the attention of the group more than ever. Whether you’re a fan, like me, or just dipping your toes into the K-Pop pool for the first time, the documentary does a good job of showing the ever-busy lives of K-Pop idols, so i definitely recommend giving her a watch.
