MANILA, Philippines – A retired judge has been arrested by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for his alleged role in the May 2019 murder of another judge in Zamboanga, the Office of the Administrator of the Supreme Court Court said on Saturday. .

In a text message to journalists, the court administrator, José Midas Márquez, said that he informed the president of the Supreme Court, Diosdado Peralta, that NBI agents arrested retired judge Oscar Tomarong, who was involved in the murder of the judge of branch 28 of the Regional Court of First Instance of Zamboanga (RTC), Reymar Lacaya.

Tomarong was also a former NBI agent, Marquez added.

Tomarong applied for optional retirement after Lacaya was assassinated inside the courthouse, Márquez said.

Márquez also pointed out that “applications for optional retirements are normally approved without prejudice to the outcome of administrative cases, if the judge has any.”

Lacaya was shot twice in the face by the suspects on a motorcycle at the RTC in Zamboanga.

On September 2, 2019, the NBI arrested Juliver Cabating, who was identified as one of the suspects in the murder. Cabating was the errand boy from Tomarong.

Tomarong, meanwhile, became a person of interest in Lacaya’s murder due to his link to Cabating.
