The undersecretary of the DEPARTMENT of Health (DOH), Maria Rosario Vergeire, on Friday, October 9, 2020, said that advocates of clinical trials for the use of the Japanese influenza drug Avigan as an experimental treatment for coronavirus disease 2019 ( Covid-19) can now start recruiting volunteers.
“We already gave the signal to the proponents. Now they are going to start recruiting participants for the trial,” Vergeire in a virtual press conference.
“Once the recruitment is complete, next week, hopefully, we can officially start now,” he added.
He said there remains a legal problem that they were solving.
“We just lack (approval) on the insurance. There was a minor comment from our legal services regarding the insurance document,” Vergeire said.
Japan shipped Avigan tablets valid for 100 patients in early August.
The DOH has identified clinical trial sites in the country as the Philippine General Hospital, Sta. Ana Hospital, Dr. José N. Rodríguez Memorial Hospital, and Quirino Memorial Medical Center. (HDT / SunStar Philippines)
