MANILA – The Philippine National Historical Commission released a “photorealistic” painting of Lapulapu on Thursday to celebrate the 499th anniversary of the Battle of Mactan.
Lapulapu is shown wearing various tattoos, “freely modeled after an illustration for the Visayan people,” according to the National Committee for the Fifteenth Anniversary (NQC).
“These tattoos were not merely decorative, as they indicate the wearer’s experiences, achievements, and triumphs in battles and encounters at sea. To represent his dignity as a warrior leader, Lapulapu is shown holding a kampilan (a Visayan blade weapon) and wearing a regal red vest and pants. Behind Lapulapu in the painting is a beach depicting Mactan, where he and other warriors fought and killed Magellan and company on April 27, 1521.
The NQC said the portrait, made by Bulacan artist Carlo Caacbay, was released to join the one-year virtual countdown for the commemorations of the fifth centenary of 2021 in the Philippines.
“Lapulapu’s portrait is part of a series of paintings commissioned by NHCP to be displayed in various public schools and government offices,” he said.
The NQC explained that the painting’s difference from previous Lapulapu representations was “the honoree’s aged appearance.”
“The NHCP endorsed the recent findings of the historian Danilo Gerona on the possible age of Lapulapu. According to his book, ‘Ferdinand Magellan: The Armada de Maluco and the European Discovery of the Philippines’ (2016), Gerona consulted the 1563 book of El Portuguese historian Gaspar Correa titled ‘Lendas da India’. This publication states that Lapulapu was very old, “said the committee.

Through painting, Filipinos can visualize the early history of the Philippines that is based on historical, cultural and archaeological research, the NQC said.
NHCP is the primary government agency responsible for preserving the Philippine history and heritage through its administration of national sanctuaries, museums, research and publication, preservation and marking of historical sites and structures.
It is the permanent administrative office for the NQC.
