MANILA – Actress Liza Soberano said on Friday she wanted to defend the silent victims of rape, rape jokes and misogyny when she brought a criminal case against a netizen who made a rape comment about her a few days ago.
Accompanied by her manager Ogie Diaz and legal advisor Atty. Jun Lim of the Lim-Yutatco-Sze law firm, Sovereign was sworn in by Assistant City Attorney Irene Ressureccion on Thursday morning.
On Friday, in an interview with Karen Dávila on ANC’s “Headstart,” Soberano emphasized that the rape joke is no laughing matter.
“The problem here is rape. I don’t think I can let that go because, for me, the reason I want to continue this case is because I wanted to defend all the silent victims of rape, of rape jokes, of misogyny. “said Sovereign.
“And I feel like it’s about time it ended because rape is not funny. There is nothing funny about joking about it.”
Sovereign believes he has a strong case against the netizen.
“There is no one you can really point to in those comments except me, because I was the only person at the time who had spoken about their company online and who had shown some disappointment with the service that was provided. So that’s quite a bit. obviously I was talking without even mentioning my name, “said Sovereign.
The actress emphasized that in addition to helping others gain the courage to stand up for themselves, she also wants to show that you can’t just bully people online.
“I think since the pandemic happened, everyone is online and I have seen a lot of people spewing so much hate. I want everyone to learn a lesson that you can’t bully people online and get away with it.”, Sovereign said.
But when asked if she would drop the cases if the netizen apologized to her, Soberano said: “Honestly, yes. What I really want is for her to apologize with my name because I want to apologize publicly, I am not. I’m sorry. sincerity. And I feel like she doesn’t really acknowledge her own mistakes if she doesn’t mention my name in her apology because it’s so easy to deny that it was me because my name wasn’t there. But then again everything they were talking about pointed at me. ” .
Aside from the netizen who made a rape comment, Soberano said that she will also file a case against another employee who revealed personal information about her stepmother when she complained about the internet service.
“Actually, they are two different people. We will also do something about the data privacy breach. It’s just that I had to take action on this other matter first because there is more urgency for me,” Soberano said.
On Thursday night, ABS-CBN and Star Magic sought to remind people to use social media responsibly, backing Soberano’s decision to file a criminal case against a netizen who threatened to rape her.
“We applaud Liza’s courage to protect her dignity as a woman. Let this be a lesson for everyone to be responsible in the use of social networks and be respectful of others, “ABS-CBN and Star Magic said in a statement.

Converge had already acknowledged the problem and said in a statement posted on Facebook: “We are deeply concerned by the incorrect comments and behavior of some employees on social media.”
