MANILA, Philippines – Rainy weather will reach the final stretch of 2020, with two low pressure areas (LPAs) bringing widespread rains in Luzon and parts of Visayas on Monday.

One LPA was estimated 40 kilometers east of Infanta, Quezon province, at 3 p.m. Sunday, while the other was seen 190 kilometers northwest of the city of Puerto Princesa in Palawan province.

Apart from the two weather shocks, the northeast monsoon, known locally as “amihan,” will continue to prevail over northern Luzon, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

The government’s weather service said on Sunday that Cagayan Valley, Aurora, Rizal and Quezon would have cloudy skies on Monday, with scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms.

Pagasa warned of possible flash floods or landslides during moderate to heavy rains.

Meanwhile, the combined effects of the northeast monsoon and the trough, or extension of the LPA, will also bring overcast skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over Samar province and the rest of Luzon.

The rest of the country can also experience isolated showers due to local thunderstorms.

In an earlier warning, Pagasa said both weather disturbances were less likely to turn into a tropical depression until Tuesday.

The National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management met on Sunday to monitor the government’s responses to the two LPAs and the rising northeast monsoon that has brought prolonged rains to various parts of the country, said presidential spokesman Harry Roque.

“We ask the public to continue to follow their local officials, monitor the latest Pagasa advisory, and be prepared in the event of an evacuation,” he said.
