MANILA, Philippines – Rain or Shine held firm to a tough 70-68 win over NorthPort to maintain their perfect record in the PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the AUF Sports Arena & Cultural Center in Pampanga.

Rey Nambatac drained a pair of pressure-laden free throws after a controversial foul against Paolo Taha with 1.3 seconds left in the game to secure the victory for the Elasto Painters, who tied TNT at the top of the standings with a record from 3-0. .

“This was an ugly game for us,” Rain or Shine’s head coach Caloy Garcia said. “I think we can do better.”

“We started badly and I think we have to be more consistent. On the defensive side we were consistent but on the offensive side I know we can be more consistent ”.

The Elasto Painters were able to keep the Batang pier just two points away on 1 of 21 shots in the third quarter to take a 46-40 lead heading into the quarter, but they had trouble freezing the game in the final period, which allowed NorthPort to tie it at 68 on a difficult layup from Christian Standhardinger.

The unfortunate NorthPort shooting in the third period equaled the second-worst mark in a quarter after Mobiline Phone Pals posted its own two-point mark in 2001.

Interestingly, the club with the worst field goal percentage in a quarter is Rain or Shine when they went 0 for 16 in the first quarter of their 69-68 loss to Magnolia in the 2019 Governor’s Cup.

“It looks like both teams got stuck offensively,” Garcia said.

Adrian Wong led the Elasto Painters offense with 15 points and Sidney Onwubere added 11 points and five rebounds.

Nambatac did his part to fill in the stat sheets with 10 points, six rebounds, six assists and one steal.

Sean Anthony and Kevin Ferrer scored 13 points and combined for 23 rebounds to lead the Batang Pier, which has yet to win in three games.
