MANILA, Philippines – Quezon City shortened the curfew from midnight to 3 a.m. from December 16 to allow people to attend Simbang Gabi, although basic health protocols will continue to be strictly enforced for holiday celebrations.

In a statement, Mayor Joy Belmonte said churches should only absorb 30 percent of their capacity for Simbang Gabi.

“Simbang Gabi is part of the Christmas celebration and our culture. So even during a pandemic, we want to keep their spirit alive, ”Belmonte said in Filipino.

Fireworks displays will only be allowed at Quezon Memorial Circle and Eastwood, and must be broadcast live “so that anyone can enjoy them without having to leave their homes,” he said.

“Outdoor or indoor venues for special events, such as restaurants, hotel ballrooms or event rooms and shopping malls atriums, may be used for business or work purposes, but subject to social distancing and strict compliance with the minimum health standards ”, he added.

The health information of participants in work and business meetings should be recorded and sent to the barangay health officials or the City’s Surveillance and Epidemiology Unit (CESU) at any time when requested for contact tracing.
